POSITION SUMMARY: Performs a variety of ultrasound procedures utilizing sensitive electronic ultrasound equipment to assist in the diagnosis of patient illness and injury.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Scans and assists Venous Procedure Patients.
  2. Performs ultrasounds in accordance with established guidelines without supervision.
  3. Reads, analyzes and interprets common scientific and technical journals, manuals and procedures.
  4. Provides patient/family education pertinent to scheduled exams.
  5. Communicates pertinent patient information promptly to appropriate technologist and/or radiologist.
  6. Applies concepts of radiology and safety when performing examinations on patients/clients.
  7. Provides quality service for all aspects of the pre-exam (QC, products and supply preparation, understanding procedures).
  8. Provides quality service for all aspects of the exam (exam, recognizing interrelationship of exams, accurate and precise resulting).
  9. Provides quality service for all aspects of the post-exam (remedial and corrective action, documentation).
  10. Demonstrates knowledge, skill and accuracy in the operation and maintenance of all department equipment.
  11. Prepares and maintains departmental records, reports, statistics, logs, files and other documents as required in written and computer format.
  12. Greets patients and schedules exams.
  13. Assist with difficult breast biopsies in the clinic if needed.
  14. Train and mentor current Radiology staff.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an approved school of Medical Sonography.
  • Registered or registry eligible.
  • Registration as a Phlebotomy Sonographer and Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
  • Current CPR Certification.

Work Relationship:

  • Reports directly to the Department Director.
  • Works closely with Physicians, Nursing, allied health practitioners and other outside medical facilities.
  • Extensive contact with venous procedure patients.
  • Occasional contact with vendors.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed largely in a pleasant hospital environment with minimal chance for personal injury.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequently exposed to risk of radiation.
  • Regular exposure to hazardous material such as needle punctures and exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Occasionally required to sit or climb.
  • Required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Occasionally may need to move patients and/or equipment of more than 100 pounds.
  • Requires specific vision abilities for far vision, near vision, depth perception, colors, accommodation and peripheral vision.
  • Vision correctable to 20/40.
