Position Summary: Assists in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help surgeons carry out safe operations with optimal results for patiends. Performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. Functions are performed during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with established standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Positions the surgical patient for the surgical procedure in a manner to provide a safe patient experience.
- Assists in providing visualization of the operative site.
- Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis.
- Assist with closure of body planes utilizing appropriate techniques.
- Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings.
- Assists in inserting and securing drainage systems to tissue.
- Assists in determining the specific equipment needed for procedures.
- Safely utilizes surgical equipment and supplies such as pneumatic tourniquets, electro cautery, and endoscopy equipment.
- Assists with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life- threatening events in the operating room.
- Cleans and prepares surgical instrumentation for use in the operating room.
- Successfully performs Surgical Technician and Central Sterile Technician duties as needed.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician program.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assisting program.
- Current Certification as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
- Current American Heart Association BLS or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Certification. Non-certified employees must attain certification within 60 days of employment in position.
- Reports directly to the Nursing Director.
- Works regularly with physicians, surgery staff, CRNA's and patients.
- Regular contact with employees from various departments and vendors.
- Work is performed largely in a pleasant hospital environment with minimal chance for personal injury.
- Frequently works near moving mechanical parts, exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock and exposed to hazardous material such as needle punctures, blood and body fluids.
- Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
