POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for planning, coordinating and directing all activities related to meeting the spiritual needs of patients, residents, families and staff. Creates and maintains a working relationship with administration, medical staff and personnel in order to establish an effective pastoral program. Coordinates the efforts of community clergy and volunteer chaplains to provide patient/resident visitation and spiritual care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides or facilitates religious services or sacramental ministry for patients and residents of all religions insofar as feasible. Works with local and area churches to provide these services.
  2. Coordinates pastoral care programs, seminars, workshops, and training opportunities for clergy, pastoral visitors and staff.
  3. Develops, revises, reviews and updates all policies and procedures for the department using guidelines of Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
  4. Maintains positive relationships and open lines of communication with local clergy to explain pertinent information and ensure effective operations.
  5. Acts as resource to employees and medical staff on religious, spiritual, and ethical matters.
  6. Provides leadership and vision for development of new programs, services and long-term goals for the department.
  7. Develops and maintains department records, reports, and patient/resident records. Compiles statistical data for administrative purposes.
  8. Investigates and takes appropriate actions to resolve department and personnel issues.

Additional Duties

  • Master's Degree from a Seminary or Pastoral program.
  • 3-5 years related experience with management experience preferred.
  • 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  • Certified by a recognized chaplain board or eligible to become certified.
  • Baptized as Catholic and currently practicing the Catholic faith.

Work Relationship:

  • Reports directly to the President/CEO.
  • Direct reports include Spiritual Care Associates and Volunteer Chaplains.
  • Works closely with physicians, department directors and staff.
  • Works regularly with community clergy.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed largely in a pleasant hospital environment with minimal chance for personal injury.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to sit and stand.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • Required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Requires specific vision abilities for far vision, near vision, depth perception, colors, accommodation and peripheral vision.
  • Vision correctable to 20/40
