POSITION SUMMARY: Responsibilities include the strategy, planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of the coding processes and policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the coding program for hospital inpatient, outpatient and professional coding functions.
  2. Performs hiring, orienting, training and ongoing evaluation of coding staff.
  3. Establishes policies and procedures; continually assesses and improving operational performance through data analysis and implementation of sustainable performance improvement initiatives.
  4. Works closely with other Directors to ensure compliance with quality and public reporting
  5. Oversees staff schedules and workload assignments to ensure meeting departmental goals.
  6. Identifies and evaluates coding practices within established standards in compliance with state and federal coding regulations.
  7. Assists with the development and implementation of policies, procedures and workflows to support accurate assignment of codes within various EMR systems.

  9. Facilitates ongoing feedback to providers relating to coding and compliant documentation, opportunities and specialty-specific coding nuances. Oversees provider education regarding coding compliance, coding quality initiatives and electronic documentation.
  10. Initiates quality improvement activities to improve workflow, operations and systems administration.
  11. Investigates and takes appropriate action(s) to resolve department and personnel problems.
  12. Maintains current training materials as well as up-to-date policies and procedures.
  13. Supports billing operations by addressing edits, discussing complex coding cases, denials/appeals, answering questions, and providing education to billing staff to improve operations.
  14. Seeks out and implements innovation and new, more efficient ways to use technology to support our services
  15. Responsible to maintain charge master for clinic and hospital systems as it relates to code assignment and billing requirements
  16. Serves as liaison between the coding department and other hospital and clinic departments, physicians and other providers.
  17. Successfully performs the duties of an RHIT as needed.
  18. Models the Divine Service Standards in all interactions and activities.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree (RHIT) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school. Other coding certifications preferred.
  • Five years related experience. Supervisory experience preferred.

Work Relationship:

  • Reports directly to the Director of Health Information.
  • Direct reports include Coders conducting inpatient, outpatient and professional services coding.
  • Regular contact with Medical Information, Business Office, Fiscal Services, IT, Medical Staff and ancillary service departments.
  • Occasional contact with government and legal agencies and patients.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed largely in a pleasant hospital environment with minimal chance for personal injury. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to sit and stand.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • Required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Requires specific vision abilities for far vision, near vision, depth perception, colors, accommodation and peripheral vision.
  • Vision correctable to 20/40.
