POSITION SUMMARY FOR TEACHER: Oversees an assigned group of children enrolled with the program ensuring quality care is provided in conjunction with the Center's education philosophy, policies and curriculum.

POSITION SUMMARY FOR ASSISTANT TEACHER: Assists in overseeing an assigned group of children enrolled with the program ensuring quality care is provided in conjunction with the Center's education philosophy, policies and curriculum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Teacher:

  1. Develops and directs an ongoing curriculum which contributes to the care, assessment, growth and development of the children, encouraging staff attention to the individual needs of each child as they may arise.
  2. Collaborates with the Child Care Center Coordinator towards achieving the Center's goals, ensures communication with parents is occurring regularly and demonstrates a professional work ethic in the classroom.
  3. Creates an atmosphere that respects each child's individual learning style and self-esteem; encourages each child's curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm for learning. Coordinates activities to utilize available space, equipment and materials.
  4. Follows standard cleaning procedures for self, children in care and facility.
  5. Maintains daily appearance of the Center and other areas at all times, providing a safe physical environment for the children and ensure that all children are within sight and sound.
  6. Assures needed supplies for lessons are ready prior to the beginning of the preschool time. Monitors inventory of program supplies, toys and equipment; communicates requests for new or additional items to supervisor.
  7. Documents any injuries, illnesses, suspected abuse or suspected disease, and reports them to the Child Care Center Coordinator or Administrative designee.
  8. Fosters positive relationships with parents and children; gets to know them on a personal level. Evaluates children to determine developmental progress and coordinates semi-annual parent/teacher conferences to discuss findings with parents.
  9. Communicates appropriately with staff members and parents respecting confidentiality of parents, children and other staff members. Demonstrates a positive leadership role during all interactions.
  10. Keeps abreast of all required certifications, re-certifications in child care and pre-school programs and improves skills by attending workshops, conferences and reading available periodicals. Shares learning opportunities with staff.
  11. Adheres to the State of Wisconsin guidelines when caring for children, warnings, write ups and termination may result in neglect or lack of knowledge of guidelines.
  12. Adheres to the Divine Savior Health Care Mission and Philosophy and abides by all policies and procedures as outlined in the Personnel Handbook and the Divine Savior Health Care Policy/Procedure Manual.
  13. Models the Divine Service Standards in all interactions and activities.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Teacher: One-year Technical Diploma or Associate's Degree in Early Childhood or related field; Bachelor's Degree desirable. Equivalent experience providing direct child care (80 full-time days or 120 half-time days) may be considered in lieu of this requirement based on standards set by the State of Wisconsin. Education must be in compliance with Wisconsin DCF 251 requirements. Assistant Teacher: Assistant Teacher coursework and/or one course for credit in early childhood education may be considered in lieu of this requirement based on standards set by the State of Wisconsin. Education must be in compliance with Wisconsin DCF 251 requirements.
  • Training in First Aid, Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Child Abuse Prevention and SIDS.
  • Current HeartSaver certification.
  • Current Registry certificate indicating qualification for position.
  • Teaching experience in a day care setting preferred.

Work Relationship:

  • Reports directly to the Child Care Center Program Coordinator.
  • Directs the activities of Assistants.
  • Regular contact with staff from Dietary and Housekeeping.
  • Occasional contact with staff from other organizational departments.
  • Extensive contact with children and their families.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed largely in a fast-paced, hectic, loud and noisy child care center environment with minimal chance for personal injury. Some regular duties performed in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Machines, Equipment, Tools Used: telephone, stroller, crib, microwave oven, stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, playground equipment.
  • Exposures: Frequent exposure to body fluids particularly during feeding and diapering. No reasonably anticipated exposure to blood. Reasonably anticipated exposure to communicable diseases or infections.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): assorted gloves.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Occasionally required to sit or climb.
  • Required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Occasionally may need to lift children up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires specific vision abilities for far vision, near vision, depth perception, colors, accommodation and peripheral vision.
  • Vision correctable to 20/40.
